Description
Every summer, there's a film that catches everyone by surprise. Last year, it was Scary Movie. In 1977, it was Star Wars, and in 1981, Raiders of the Lost Ark. While The Fast and the Furious may not be in the same league as these classics, it certainly surprised audiences similarly. The plot and dialogue are sparse, and some of the acting is weak, but the film exudes testosterone. It gets your blood pumping, raises your adrenaline, and bombards you with fast cars, attractive women, and a significant draw—Vin Diesel. There's something about him, maybe his charisma, charm, or his resemblance to 80s action heroes with his chiseled triceps and muscular physique. Whatever it is, Vin Diesel just has "it".
The Fast and the Furious is everything you might hope for in a summer movie and nothing more. It's the epitome of a teenage summer film, explaining why exit polls showed 65-70% of viewers were under 21. Despite pushing 30, it’s exhilarating to lose yourself in a film that reminds you of high school and watching street racers hitting 140 mph with NOS in their cars.
Unlike Mission Impossible, which features intricate plots, or Armageddon, which dazzles with special effects, The Fast and the Furious immerses you in a world where people live life "a quarter mile at a time."
Vin Diesel stars as Dominic Toretto, a burly, bald mechanic who owns a garage and street races for extra cash. Paul Walker (known for The Skulls and Varsity Blues) plays Brian Spindler, a cop who infiltrates the street gang to uncover the culprits hijacking trucks and stealing merchandise. With about four rival gangs in L.A., he must identify the guilty party. Along the way, he's seduced by the lifestyle, but what viewers really want are the races, crashes, fights, and some romance. And The Fast and the Furious delivers. If the trailer excited you, the film won't disappoint. It will transport you for 90 minutes into a world where Hondas are souped up to look like dragons and junkyard scraps are rebuilt to be better, stronger, and faster. If the commercial appealed to you, the film will too.
And then there's Vin Diesel. He first gained recognition in Saving Private Ryan as Caparzo. He made a big impact as Riddick in Pitch Black, which put him on the map, followed by Boiler Room, showing another side of him. But in The Fast and the Furious, it's all about muscle and bravado. Vin Diesel is destined for great things. This film ensures he's no longer a nobody. Isn't it thrilling to witness the rise of a new action hero?
